¿Ubuntu o Mandriva?

Gracias por la aclaración, empanada. Ya puedo volver al escritorio de Ubuntu con el comando "startx". Siguiendo tus recomendaciones de buscar por Google, estoy leyendo información sobre Apt, Aptitude, Automatix y EasyUbuntu, sistemas todos ellos para facilitar la instalación de aplicaciones, aunque todo se puede hacer vía Terminal/Consola (para expertos).
En cuanto a lo de buscar el log del fallo de X, ¿dónde y cuándo hay que solicitarlo? ¿En una consola? ¿En una Terminal? ¿Antes o después del fallo? Ten en cuenta que ahora estoy probando Ubuntu con el driver instalado y ya funciona correctamente la Ati. Quizás entonces no se pueda ver el fallo. Pero, desde luego, me gustaría saber si también se hubiera podido ajustar la tarjeta gráfica por la línea de comandos, sin instalar drivers.

El log has de mirarlo despues del fallo:

En el Xorg.0.log está el registro completo de tu último arranque, y en Xorg.1.log el registro del penúltimo arranque.
De manera que la secuencia correcta para saber cual es el fallo en el xorg.conf que te propuse, repite la operación de salvaguarda de tu actual xorg.conf, cambiar el contenido por el que te propuse, reiniciar las X (que no arrancaran debido al fallo que me comentas), restaurar el xorg.conf que SI te funciona, y tras ese arranque, postear aqui el contenido de Xorg.1.log, ya que el log que nos interesa es el del penúltimo arranque, que es el que falló.
¿Razones para seguir buscando el error?:
-Seguir aprendiendo
-Probablemente este error lo sigas teniendo con otras versiones de Ubuntu y seguramente incluso con otras distros (Mandriva incluida), de manera que si sabes como solucionarlo desde justo despues de la instalación, mejor ¿no?.
-El driver libre de Ati es bastante mejr que el propietario. Por ejemplo, si quieres usar un escritorio con efectos OpenGL (con Beryl o Compiz), si usas el driver de Ati, solamente lo podrás usar a través de xserver-xgl, que consume recursos a lo bestia, haciendo que no puedas usarlo de manera habitual porque convierte tu ordenador en un tractor de hace 40 años. Además no tendrás aceleración 3D, necesaria por ejemplo, para usar GoogleEarth).
Si usas el driver libre, tendrás aceleración 3D, pero sobre todo, usarás Aiglx para obtener esos efectos OpenGL, lo cual es infinitamente mas liviano para el procesador.

PD: He encontrado el error revisando el log que me habías puesto (es que no me diste tiempo a acabar de postearte mi xorg.conf propuesto y ya me habías dicho que habías instalado el driver propietario)
El problema está en algun dispositivo wacom que tienes conectado (probablemente una digitalizadora). Prueba este xorg.conf, tiene que funcionar si o si:

Gracias por el nuevo Xorg, aunque, por desgracia... el mismo fallo.
¿Una digitalizadora? ¿Como las de Wacon, como las de Microsoft?... No, no tengo de eso yo. Lo más parecido que tengo es una PDA Palm (la cual estoy intentando aprender cómo sincronizar con Ubuntu), la cual la tengo conectada ahora mismo por USB, pero no sé si la está reconociendo. Aparte de eso tengo una placa base de Pentium 4 Presscott a 3.2 Ghz con 1.5 GB de RAM, tarjeta de sonido SoundBlaster SLive! (8 años de antigüedad), la susodicha Ati, disco duro Maxtor de 120 GB, una antena Bluetooth por USB (otra conectividad pendiente), tarjeta Ethernet alámbrica conectada a un Router Wi-Fi Conceptronic (funciona perfecto y a la primera), una impresora HP 940c Deskjet (pendiente de instalar pero conectada), teclado genérico alámbrico, ratón laser inalámbrico Microsoft, un lector-grabador de CD/DVD dual doble capa, un lector de CD/DVD (roto), una disquetera de 3.5'', conexión audio RCA al equipo de música (salida nada más), auriculares con micrófono para videoconferencias, web-cam Genius por USB y, por último, una tarjeta PCI sintonizadora híbrida TDT/Analógica con captura de vídeo de la misma. De vez en cuando conecto, para copias de seguridad, dos discos duros por USB (sin alimentación eléctrica adicional).

En cuanto a lo del driver libre para mi Ati, me comentan "por ahí" que esos drivers solamente están disponibles para versiones RADEON superiores a la 9250 (la mía es la 9200) :ciego:

No puedes estar usando el corg.conf que yo te propongo....porque en el, el driver a usar es el "radeon", no el "fglrx".

Esto confirma lo anterior, porque en el xorg.conf propuesto he eliminado todo rastro de "/dev/wacom".
Por cierto, lo de la tableta misteriosa, es un error de Ubuntu, alguien se ha "colado" :-D , porque hoy he estado en casa de un amigo que tiene Ubuntu y una Ati como tu, y tambien le he visto las mismas secciones referentes a una digitalizadora...que ni tiene ni ha tenido jamás :blind: ¿¿¿?? :???: .
